Tell us about your background

After training as a gardener at the MFR du Grand Mas in Uzès, in 1982 I started a garden creation and maintenance company. Very quickly, I turned to natural gardens. It was only in 2000 that I opened my private gardens as part of the time of gardens in Languedoc Roussillon.

How did you plan your garden?

My gardens were made in time from 1992 to 2012. Desires for materials, colors were sources of inspiration and motivation. A part of intuition certainly also…

What can we see there?

The Redounel gardens are available in 5 atmospheres: The Japanese-inspired garden is the oldest and dates from 1992. This garden is located in front of my house. The goal was to create a soft atmosphere punctuated by the seasons. I chose plants with white flowers and green leaves, with a very clear space and a wilder part where there is a pond. Elements such as the trellis and the bamboo barrier, 4 trees shaped to Japanese pruning, the Tsukubai fountain, orientalizes this garden. The romantic flower garden : this garden dates from 2000, at that time it had the function of vegetable garden. Since then it has been transformed into a flower garden. Here we rediscover the atmosphere of our grandmothers' gardens. Several small intimate spaces where tables and chairs invite you to sit: on the terrace of the shed, under the metal gazebo, very close to the fountain. The senses on the alert, the fragrances and colors of the flowers, the music of the water, the rustling of the grasses… The dry garden : this is the entrance to the property. Here, the idea was to work on the contrasts, shapes and colors of the leaves, while being part of the rural Mediterranean landscape. Here the soil being clay, it was necessary to create raised beds to plant very dry soil plants such as cistus, phlomis, sage, lavender, etc ... there are also olive trees and different Florentine cypresses. This garden is not watered, it is autonomous. The nourishing garden : this land called "Fontanilles" was acquired in 2009. This land had been used formerly for food crops because fruit trees were present and there was an old spring catchment. Since about fifteen plots of vegetable garden are cultivated by families of the village and surroundings. It is a place of exchange, sharing, education in nature and conviviality ... around vegetables! The contemporary garden : this is my last creation. Born in 2012, it had been in project for 11 years, I was waiting for a satisfactory biological bathing process. Here the purification is not done by plants, it is a biofilter system with bacteria and an ozone treatment placed in a technical room. From a constraint which is to enclose a swimming space for safety, I made it an asset. The walls allow a play of light and shade while reflecting in the water. The mirror effect of the pelvis is accentuated by the overflow on two sides. I chose noble materials: lime with natural pigments, natural cement, raw reclaimed wood, raw metal. Here the decor is very refined, the angular lines are softened by plants with round shapes, the curves of two metal walls. This space is dedicated to the sun, water and idleness, it is a space for relaxation, sharing, games, change of scenery with living water for perfect harmony.

Do you have any advice for those who would like to have several different atmospheres in their garden?

The gaze must gradually discover the different atmospheres. The easiest way is to partition the zones. Structures such as walls, low walls, barriers, ganivelles, metal screens, chestnut, heather, bamboo facilitate this. Shrubs can also have this function. If there is enough space, transitions materialized by plants or empty spaces can be envisaged. The configuration of certain small gardens naturally lends itself to several atmospheres, because the gaze does not cover the entire garden. This is the case of gardens with three zones, the front, one side and the back of the house.

Can we visit yours?

From spring to autumn, opening dates are scheduled, sometimes within the framework of regional events, such as "Temps des Jardins en Languedoc Roussillon", or national events such as "Rendez-vous aux jardins", but not only. The visits to the gardens are free, but we often offer entertainment (picking wild salads, field buffets, introduction to entomology, etc.), artistic exhibitions. There are also "special flowering" days outside the program, which can only be scheduled 15 days in advance, to make the public discover exceptional flowerings: white wisteria, grasses and fall colors ...
